7 Actions to Take After a Slip and Fall Accident

Slip and fall accidents can happen any time and anywhere. They can also have severe and detrimental results. Injuries from slip and fall accidents range from simple bumps and bruises to broken bones and even death. This is why it is imperative for property owners to maintain their spaces and facilities to ensure safety for residents and visitors. Whether the property is a home, business, or public facility such as a park, the liability lies on the owner to maintain an environment that is relatively free of dangers. If a person legally enters a property and falls victim to an unsafe condition, they may be able to take legal action and receive compensation for damages incurred.

If you were recently injured in a slip and fall accident – or if you ever become a victim of a slip and fall accident – it is in your best interest to take the seven steps:

  1. Inform the property owner or manager about your accident and ask if they will file a report with either their company or their insurance. Then ask for a copy of that report. If they do not file a report, then write down the details of your accident yourself, make a copy, and then mail it to the property owner.
  2. Take photos of the environment in which you were injured.
  3. If there were any witnesses, speak to them to see if they are willing to write down or be recorded with their statements: what they saw and know of the area. You can record the witnesses with your phone. Also, remember to get their contact information if they are willing to provide it.
  4. Make an appointment with a medical professional to have your injuries examined. Even if your injuries do not require emergency treatment, it is wise to visit a doctor anyways, so that any injuries (present or latent) can be diagnosed, treated, and documented.
  5. Do not throw any documents away, including notes and bills from your doctors, messages between you and the property owner, and any other documents that discuss your slip and fall accident.
  6. Do not speak with an insurance adjuster representing the property owner without legal representation. If you do not have an attorney lined up, just Call Lee. The slip and fall injury lawyers at Cohen & Newmark, PLLC are dedicated to protecting victims’ rights and procuring compensation from injury claims.
  7. Remember that you have the right to pursue compensation for your injuries. Your recovery requires fair compensation to cover medical bills, lost wages, and other incidentals.
